Why is the Clifford Brown playalong not available? It was one of my favorites when I was in high school. Was there some licensing issues?

Contact Don Sickler (good luck) at Second Floor Music in the city (ie. NY). He is the main culprit as to why volume 53 is no longer available. He is also the reason you don't see more Clifford Brown Material on the market.

www.secondfloormusic.com or www.donsickler.com
Good luck! I think we have more of a chance of seeing the second coming than making any progress with Volume 53.

I have visited both websites and I fail to see where this Don Sickler is involved with the withholding of Brownie's music. In fact he does not even list himself as ever playing with or writing for Clifford Brown. What gives????

The most I can gleen from these sites is that Brownie's widow, LaRue, is somehow involved in the control of Clifford's music, but there is no explanation of direct control, or why his music was pulled off the market. They don't even sell some of the tunes I was looking for, especially "Tiny Capers." So if Brownie didn't write it, who did??? And why is it still so unavailable???

James this is a very good question for you because at one time his music was available. Please give us a more detailed answer than just "copyright" problems.

Don Sickler owns the rights to all of Clifford Brown's tunes. He has control over anything in print that was written by Clifford Brown. I am not an expert in copyright law. If you are interested in the legalities of copyright law as it concerns music, you would have to talk to an attorney or someone who knows more about it than myself. I do know that Larue Brown Watson and Don Sickler were very good friends. As you may not know, Clifford Brown's widow Larue Brown Watson passed away last October. There's a lot more to the story but in the interest of respecting others' privacy...

You ask lastly in your post, "And why is it still so unavailable???" Go to my first post and read your answer: "He (ie. Don Sickler) is also the reason you don't see more Clifford Brown material on the market."

Tiny Capers was written by Clifford Brown and was originally copyrighted in 1954.

Without being specific, a court action by a certain individual pulled some of Clifford Brown's Material off the market.

You say you "visited both web sites and fail to see where this Don Sickler is involved with the withholding of Brownie's music." I would guess to say that Don Sickler doesn't think it's anyone's business what he does or doesn't do with music he owns the copyrights to.

Are you familiar with the magazine"Jazz Improv?" Take a look at Volume 3 Number 3 published in 2001. That's the issue with Clifford Brown's picture on the cover. Go to page 205. There is a transcription of Clifford Brown's solo on Daahoud (alt. take) with Don Sickler being credited with the transcription. The credits go on to say that this transcription will appear in Don Sickler's upcoming book of transcriptions of solos by Clifford Brown published by Second Floor Music, 130 W. 28th St. 2nd floor NYC 10001. This was in 2001. Did you see any mention of the "upcoming" book when you visited both sites? I didn't either. There is no book in print as described in the Jazz Improv magazine. However, don't hold Jazz Improv responsible. I contacted them and they told me that they are at the mercy to reasonably believe what Don Sickler told them. They are sorry the aforementioned book never came out, but they have no control over what Don Sickler does or doesn't do. I am personally disgusted that more of Clifford Brown's music is not available, and that some of the little bit that is out there was pulled from the market.

There you go. That's the short version to a very long story.

Joseph,
thanks for all the info. I made a mistake and said James needed to answer the question and I meant Jamey as in Aebersold. Wow, there is some history there. No I do not want all the legalities of copyright, too complicated for me. I just thought there was some "inside" info that could be divulged without hurting anyone at this late date. I noticed on Sickler's sight (or was it the first one Second Floor Music) that only two of Clifford's tunes are available in any form, Daahoud and Joy Spring. I am probably wrong but it seems as if Sickler is missing a golden opportunity with the rest of Clifford's tunes and his marketing seems to be very limited. What a terrible mess that is restricting Clifford's music from being played and heard.

Yes I am familiar with the magazine and I just looked up the website and saw that Vol 3, number 3 is "sold out."

Thanks again Joseph
